The OSI and MDA are proud to host the 3rd Annual John S. MacDonald Space Lecture on 22 January, 2025. The talk will feature Marc Garneau, Canadian astronaut and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, Romanian cosmonaut and former Chairman of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space!

The event will be held from 4:30PM – 6:00PM (PST) at the Frederic Wood Theatre, located on the UBC campus.

Because space is limited, please register on Eventbrite to reserve a seat.

Speaker Bio
Marc Garneau spent 10 years as a naval officer and combat systems engineer with the Canadian Armed Forces. In 1984, he became the first Canadian astronaut to go to space as Payload Specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, and, from 2001 to 2005, was president of the Canadian Space Agency. As a federal politician, he has served as Liberal house leader, Minister of Transport and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Dumitru Dorin Prunariu is a Romanian cosmonaut and diplomat who was the first Romanian citizen in space, travelling to the Salyut 6 space station aboard Soyuz 40 in 1981. He is one of the founding members (1985) and former President (2011-2014) of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE). From 1998 to 2004 he was president of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), from 2004 to 2005 he was the ambassador of Romania to the Russian Federation, and from 2010 to 2012 he was chair of the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Exploration of Outer Space.
